Thornbury homes and spray foam
Much of the removal work in Thornbury is in period and listed homes and modern estates. Here's what that means for the job.
Older and listed homes often have original timbers, lime mortar and slate or clay tiles that need gentle handling. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with the council before any roof work, and choose a firm that has removed foam from older roofs without damaging the structure.
Newer homes are less likely to have spray foam, because it was usually added later as a retrofit rather than when the house was built. Modern roofs often use trussed rafters and breathable membranes, and the membrane is the part most at risk during removal, so ask how the firm will protect it.

Listed buildings, planning and scams in Thornbury
South Gloucestershire Council handles planning, listed building consent and conservation areas in Thornbury. Many homes here are older or listed, so check with the council's planning team before any work to the roof. Removing foam inside a listed building can still need consent if it affects historic fabric.
If someone cold calls or knocks on your door in Thornbury offering to remove spray foam, be careful. The Property Care Association has warned about fake surveyors and false claims that homes are on a "national database". You can report a doorstep trader to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline.
What happens when you book removal in Thornbury
- Survey. A firm visits your Thornbury home to check the foam type, the roof area, the access and the membrane, then fixes the price.
- Removal. Checkatrade says most removals take two to five days, with large or hard-to-reach roofs taking longer.
- Clean-down and inspection. The timbers are cleaned so a surveyor can see them, and any damage is recorded.
- Waste and paperwork. The foam goes to a licensed site, and you get a completion report with photos and a waste transfer note.
- Re-insulation. New insulation goes in if it's part of the job.
